Google Analytics (GA) is one of, if not the, most valuable analytics tools to track website traffic. If you were to ask me what analytics tool I couldn’t live without for monitoring my digital marketing campaigns, GA would be my answer without hesitation.

During my time as a digital marketer, I’ve flirted on and off with the idea of taking the GA Individual Qualification (IQ) exam. Each time I thought of the possibility, I would ask myself “why?” and quickly move on.

That’s why I’m here to answer the question for you! It’s easy to procrastinate on something that is likely not a mandatory qualification. Heck, I did.

Or maybe you already know all there is to know about GA and feel that the GAIQ exam is a waste of time. That’s fair.

However, hindsight is 20/20. I’m going to tell you why you should become Google Analytics Certified and how to do so efficiently!

Why Bother Becoming Google Analytics Certified?

I’m not going to sit here with a straight face and say that one of the reasons I took the GAIQ exam wasn’t for bragging rights. That would be a lie.

Sure, I already use the program on a daily basis. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why I put off taking the test in the first place.

But the personal satisfaction of passing the exam alone is enough for me to recommend doing it!

Okay, so we’ve established the personal satisfaction and bragging rights. But you may be wondering what the other benefits are of becoming GA Certified. Here are a few that I find most important.



Enhance Your Resume

Have you ever lied on your resume? Probably.

Anyone can list Google Analytics as a skill on their resume. But can everyone list that they are Google Analytics Certified? Nope!

Passing the GAIQ exam serves as proof of your efficiency in GA. It also lets potential employers know that you mean business when it comes to analytics.


Strengthen Your Already Amazing Skills

Already a Google Analytics pro? That’s what I thought too. That was until I did my research for the GAIQ exam.

As it turns out, I wasn’t as big of an analytics guru as I had initially thought. Despite the crushed ego, this was a good learning experience for me and it likely will be for you too.

Google Analytics can do incredible things and has many customization options. Some GA tools may have been hiding and I promise you’ll thank yourself for the teachable moment.

As a bonus, you may even learn that there’s a much easier way to do what you’re doing already. Yay for efficiency!

So You Want to Take the Google Analytics IQ Exam. Now What?

So you’ve decided that you want to become Google Analytics Certified- great choice! Now, it’s time to take the next steps.

The first thing that you’re going to want to do is study the material Google Analytics Academy provides. This includes Digital Analytics Fundamentals and Google Analytics Platform Principles.

Seriously, DO NOT do anything else until you have completed these two training materials. This is especially important if you are new to GA.

Don’t forget to take notes! There will be practice questions at the end of each lesson. Do them! Those questions are there for a reason and you will regret not taking notes.

While you’re going through the Google Analytics Academy training materials, they will have you create a practice account. Use it!

Take your time to look around and become familiar with the program. The training program will only have you use this account for a few activities. Don’t limit yourself to these. Explore!

Once you feel comfortable, check out the Analytics IQ study guide. You don’t have to read it now, but definitely keep it on hand when you’re taking the test. The great thing about the GAIQ exam is that you can use your notes, so take advantage of this!


Tips and Tricks for Taking the GAIQ Exam

Congratulations, you’ve made it to the final step! It’s okay to be nervous. I would be lying if I said I didn’t sit in front of my laptop making excuses to not start the exam.

It’s important to remember that you have 90 minutes to complete the 80 question test. Questions consist of both multiple choice and true or false questions. Don’t stress about time. It will be ok!

If you’re organized and have all your notes and resources open in another tab or browser, you will be ok. You cannot, however, skip a question.

This is important when completing a test or exam with a time limit. Because of this, you will want to make sure that you are as organized as possible. This ensures you don’t spend too much time on one individual question.

In order to pass the exam, you need to receive a final mark of 80%.

This means that you will need to correctly answer 64 questions to complete the exam with a passing grade. Again, this shouldn’t be too much of a concern if you’ve completed the above steps.

Do your research. Keep your resources readily available during the exam and you will do fine!
