We’ve been using Instagram for a few years and have kept up with the many changes the photo-sharing platform has gone though. Personally, I’m amazed at how my 12 year old son uses Instagram to communicate with friends, bands, some brands, and a few randoms. It’s like nothing I’ve seen before, but I absolutely “get it”.

Before we get into the Infographic, I’d like to mention that Instagram is useless for SEO. Instagram will be a very poor choice if you’re using the platform to drive traffic to your website or landing page. To find out why, read this article.

Having said that, don’t use Instagram for SEO! Use it for engagement and impressions. If used strategically, you can turn engagement and impressions into qualified leads and/or paid customers by creating content to move prospects through the sales funnel.

I see this too many times. Inconsistent branding or “look & feel” to a businesses content shared on Instagram. Your social media manager or graphic designer should aim to theme your photos with the same familiar and branded look and feel.

This doesn’t have to include applying the same filter to each picture, although that is an option that many brands, including a few that I’ve worked with, use successfully. The point is to give your fans the opportunity to easily recognize your content and distinguish your posts from other competitors on the platform.


Imbed Instagram Posts

Another thing I saw way too many times in 2014. Why would you upload a photo, the same photo you uploaded to Instagram, to your blog article on your website?

I’d take a look at my photo options for that particular blog and then if I find one that I want to use, I’ll go to Instagram and check the analytics to see how well it performed, in terms of engagement, on Instagram.

If it turns out the post performed well and received many likes, comments, or re-grams, you should embed that photo via the Instagram embed post option. That way, you expand that posts engagement opportunity by allowing a popular photo to be on your bloom and Instagram users can engage with the photo (like, share) right on your website, just like they were actually engaging with the post on Instagram! Get it?


Add Context To Your Content

When producing content to share on Instagram, remember too always add content to your photographs or videos. How do you do this? It’s simple, really.

Take photos or videos of your product or service at work. A quick demonstration of how your product/service works and solves potential customers problems, will be beneficial to your Instagram strategy and ultimately your bottom line.


Get Personal, Show Personality

This one should be a given but unfortunately it’s not. Social media is supposed to be social. It’s an opportunity for “cold” brands to warm up to consumers and show off some personality, while personalizing their brand.

Create a trustworthy image that your fans can relate to and showcase your company, your staff, and your work space/environment. Everyone likes behind the scenes stuff and if you make your content engaging enough, your only worry is replying to all the social engagement your business will receive through this kind of social amplification.
